  • The Depot of Dutch Electronic Publications (DNEP)
The Royal Library (KB) of the Netherlands is also responsible for electronic on-line publications, including electronic journals published by the major publishers and Internet publications. The Library catalogues, stores and provides access to these publications, which are rapidly increasing in number. It is estimated that, in a few years' time, they will occupy dozens of terabytes of storage. The DNEP is the system used for storing, processing and providing access to these publications.

  • The Internet Archive
This large-scale project was developed by the American computer programmer Brewster Kahle. The project has been archiving parts of the Internet, from newsgroups to home pages, since the summer of 1996, and 'web-crawling robots' are used for this purpose. These robots are programs that search for other sites via external links and download them in their entirety, thereby producing 'snapshots' of the Internet. By September 2000, approximately one billion unspecified web pages had been archived, along with some 16 million news messages - the majority html files.
Downloads were also made of election sites during the American presidential election of 2000.

  • The Kulturarw3 Project
The Swedish Royal Library launched this project in 1997. Its purpose is to archive as much of possible of the Swedish part of the Internet (i.e. all URLs with the extension '.se'). Since the project was launched, several 'snapshots' have been taken and approximately 56,000 web sites have been archived. However, the general public do not yet have access to the archive. The National Library of Finland has now launched a similar project.

  • Occasio
The International Institute of Social History (IISG) takes a great interest in news groups on the web. Early on, action groups and social movements discovered that they could use the Internet as a cheap, effective way of publicising their views and mobilising support. Whereas the IISG previously collected the printed publications of such groups, it now collects their newsgroup messages. In 1995, 'Occasio' was launched for the purpose of archiving almost one thousand Internet newsgroups belonging to the Association for Progressive Communication. At the beginning of 2000, the archive comprised approximately one million messages, including much material on the civil war in former Yugoslavia and the uprising against Soeharto in Indonesia.
